Teaching rooms at CBS

We operate with three types of teaching rooms at CBS.

When you need to request teaching rooms for your course it is relevant to first consider which teaching format you intend to use. Your teaching format will guide you and the timetabling team to appropriate types of teaching rooms.

At CBS we have approximately 100 teaching rooms which are designed with different teaching formats in mind.

Listed below you will find short descriptions of three of the main teaching formats employed at CBS.

Lecture

Traditional teacher-led sessions where subject matter is presented and explained to a (large) group of students.

  • Learning comes from: Teacher
  • Centeredness: Teacher-centered
  • Student in-session movement: Seated
  • Example of teaching format: Lecturing

Exercise

Interactive sessions engaging students and teachers, with a focus on dialogue, or practicing and applying concepts.

  • Learning comes from: Dialogue
  • Centeredness: Student centered
  • Student in-session movement: Seated
  • Examples of teaching format: Dialogue-based teaching, lecturing with breakouts

Workshop

Collaborative sessions where students engage in intensive, hands-on activities and group work.

  • Learning comes from: Collaborative activity
  • Centeredness: Student group centered
  • Student in-session movement: Seated/standing/moving
  • Examples of teaching format: Workshops, group-based teaching (teacher circulating), studio-based learning

These three teaching formats match one or more of the three general teaching room types: Auditorium, Classroom and Active Learning Space.

Timetable process

At CBS the timetabling process runs two times a year and follows the same general deadlines each year:

  • Fall semesters:

February/ March: Collection of information about the courses for the coming semester by APU. If you have specific room requirements, e.g. moveable tables, please inform your APU-contact.

June: Timetables are published, and academic staff are informed about teaching room allocations

  • Spring semesters:

August/ September: Collection of information about the courses for the coming semester by APU. If you have specific room requirements, e.g. moveable tables, please inform your APU-contact.

December: Timetables are published, and academic staff are informed about teaching room allocations.

Please note that it is not always possible to meet the wishes for a specific room type: CBS has the least number of square meters per student when compared to the other Danish universities. Furthermore, some teaching room types are more in demand that others. If your requested type of room is not available, you will be given the closest possible match to your request. For instance, if an Active Learning Space is not available a Classroom is selected instead.
