Learning consultants’ reflection on NN connections of this activity
This teaching activity that Pernille Steen Pedersen uses in her course is designed to help students strengthen their ability to reflect, empathise, and address dilemmas holistically, directly connecting to the graduate attribute: “You understand ethical dilemmas and have the leadership values to overcome them” (NN5).
The activity encourages students to think ‘in dilemmas’, moving beyond fixed solutions and instead focusing on understanding the complexity of ethical issues. Students identify dilemmas through interviews conducted in real-life settings, then articulate and analyse them using course readings, applying ethical reasoning and critical thinking. Students then get an opportunity to take a step back and consider the perspectives of multiple stakeholders that are presented during a panel session. This approach fosters their ability to empathise with others and recognise the competing values and priorities at play.
In the following videos, Pernille introduces the approach and, in a conversation with her student Frederik, reflects on its benefits for student learning. She also discusses how teachers in other disciplines can apply this method in their own classes.
