Case-Based Teaching and Case Writing – a blended learning course

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Case-based teaching is a central teaching method in business education, supporting active learning, analytical thinking, and the application of theory to practice. This course offers a practical introduction to both teaching with cases and developing your own teaching materials.

Through three interactive workshops, you will experience the case method from the learner’s perspective, explore different case formats, including multimedia and live cases, and experience how to lead rich, discussion-driven sessions. You will also begin developing your own teaching case—from initial idea to draft—supported by practical guidance, peer feedback, and optional use of generative AI tools.

The blended learning format allows time for reflection, peer feedback, and iterative development between workshops. By the end of the course, you will have created a draft teaching case and gained experience with concrete facilitation techniques you can immediately apply in your classroom.

TIME AND LOCATION:

The course consists of three in-person workshops, and your registration covers the entire workshop series. Please expect to spend 1-2 hours of preparation time before each workshop.

Teaching with Cases: (2.5 hour workshop)

Two experienced case teachers, Professor Christina Lubinski, Department of Business, Humanities and Law and Associate Professor Jacobo Ramirez, Department of Management, Society and Communication will introduce their own cases, and you will analyse and discuss the case questions and dilemmas.

Foundations of case based teaching and writing (2.5 hour workshop):

You will find out how to download sample cases with instructions for teachers from large international case databases. You will also become familiar with different case formats ranging from classic written cases to multimedia and AI-enhanced cases. We will discuss how cases can best support the learning objectives of a course, and you will be working hands-on with your own example.

Case Writing (2.5 hour workshop)

2^nd December at 12:30-15:00
Location: K 2.53

You will develop a case concept and provide structured peer feedback to other participants’ case concepts. We will discuss how to use generative AI in a meaningful and transparent way when developing a teaching case and you will discover CBS case collections and their publication requirements and criteria.
