Case-based teaching

By participating in this course you will:

This course will equip you with a solid understanding of the motivations for using the case-based teaching method, an overview of options for integrating business cases into course curriculum, and a thorough set of tools to help you develop your own case teaching practice.

The case-based teaching approach places student engagement and participation at the center of the learning process. We see it as an active process in which students not only learn a specific set of skills, but cultivate capabilities that can inform a lifetime of leadership: a talent for analytical reasoning, a capacity for exercising critical judgment, respect for different points of view, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and an appetite for decisive action. When well managed, case-based learning can lead to satisfying experiences for both instructors and students.

Orchestrating learning processes in which students develop generalizable or transferable knowledge from specific, research-based stories of management experience places a different kind of burden on both the instructor and student and requires different kinds of preparation and classroom management than what many of us may be used to. This course addresses that challenge.

Additionally, you will:

During these two days together, we will immerse ourselves in case discussion, discussion leadership, and various methods for orchestrating active, discussion-based learning. In addition, you will:

  • Learn how to (prepare to) lead case discussion and case-based learning processes
  • Review methods for preparing students for success in case-based learning and setting clear expectations for the classroom
  • Discuss opportunities for integrating current research and case-based teaching, to more actively bring today’s scholarship and business practices into the classroom

This is a hands-on seminar: applied and practical. Expect to read material in advance, participate in discussion of written cases, ask questions, do group work, observe others, and make short presentations.

Target group
The course is structured so that both novices with the case study method and veteran teachers alike can benefit from the programme.
