Course Content
Since Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools became widely available, the creation of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) has been consistently mentioned as one of the tasks that can be greatly facilitated by these tools. Indeed, any GenAI tool can generate MCQs at a much higher speed than a human can, an advantage that many teachers would like to benefit from. However, little attention has been paid to the quality of the MCQs generated by GenAI or to how we can best use GenAI to create well-designed questions.
The overall objective of this workshop is to apply research-based recommendations to design effective MCQs using CoPilot, a GenAI tool from Microsoft.
The workshop will start with an overview of a series of research-based guidelines to write effective MCQs and some ideas to write questions that target higher-order thinking skills. After this, participants will be guided to interact with Copilot to write MCQs for one of their courses. Using a sample prompt as a starting point, participants will be asked to consider adapting this prompt to their specific needs, evaluate Copilot’s output, and assess the strengths and limitations of the tool in producing MCQs.
