New to Teaching: a Programme for CBS PhD students

The aim of this programme is to enhance your teaching skills and boost your confidence in the classroom. The programme is designed to provide you with fundamental knowledge, strategies, and tools that will help you take on the role of a university educator. Through this programme, you will plan a lesson, gain practical experience, and receive constructive feedback. You will benefit the most from this programme when you have been assigned a course that you will teach in.

Programme overview

  1. A 2-day intensive course:
On day one, you will learn about classroom-management techniques and evidence-based strategies for effective learning. You will also practice your teaching skills by taking part in an exercise and getting feedback from your peers.
On day two, you will work on developing a lesson plan for your course, for which you will be presented with inspiration and ideas for activity design, student engagement, and feedback provision.
NB: This is a two-day course.
  1. Individual teaching supervision:
As part of the programme, you will receive feedback on your teaching from an experienced learning consultant. This allows you to focus on your specific teaching challenges and goals. The supervision process is organised as follows:
  • Pre-observation meeting to align expectations and identify needs.
  • Observation of teaching.
  • Post-observation debrief.
  • Submission of a written reflection.
  • Written feedback from the facilitator.

3. Elective courses (equivalent to 1 course day / approximately 7 hours):
For the final part of the programme, you can choose from a variety of additional courses in EDQ’s course catalogue. You decide whether you would like to participate in a 1-day course or several shorter courses, workshops or webinars. This allows you to tailor the programme to your interests and needs.

Competencies

After completion of the programme, you will be able to:
• Consider how to promote student engagement and active learning in your context.
• Reflect on aspects of classroom management.
• Develop a lesson plan that aligns learning goals with learning activities and assessment.
• Focus on continuous development of your teaching skills.
